Behind the May Day lily of the valley custom, there is a story. The tradition dates back to the 16th century.
On May 1, 1561, King Charles IX received a sprig of lily of the valley as a lucky charm . Seduced by the idea, he decided to offer it to all the ladies of the court and made this gesture a habit.
Since then, the tradition has remained, but with a few small changes. Now lily of the valley is associated with Labour Day which is also celebrated on May 1.
On this day, we give each other lily of the valley to wish each other happiness, especially for work.
A good tip to enjoy lily of the valley for free in May is to replant the lily of the valley from the pot that you purchased the previous year. Thrush regrows quite easily!
So if you have a garden or a balcony, you no longer need to spend €2 or €3 every year to get one.
And you can share it with your family or friends. You will please without spending a penny!
